Trade & Sourcing
from India.
India Desk · Sourcing

India produces
almost everything.

India is the world's second-largest agricultural producer, a top-five global food exporter, and one of the most competitive sources for manufactured goods across dozens of categories. The challenge for European buyers is not availability. It is finding the right supplier, verifying their quality, navigating the compliance requirements, and managing a supply chain that spans thousands of kilometres.

Our on-ground presence across New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad means we are not coordinating your Indian supply chain from a desk in Europe. We are there, speaking to producers, walking warehouses, and managing the trade cycle from the point of origin.

Food and agricultural products are our primary focus — built on years of direct relationships with producers, export houses, and commodity traders across India. We also source industrial goods, textiles, chemicals, and manufactured products on request. If it exists in India, we can source it.

Product Categories

The categories we
source most actively.

India's food and agricultural export basket is among the most diverse in the world. These are the categories we source with direct supplier relationships and established trade routes.

01

Spices & Herbs

India supplies over 75% of the world's spices. We source directly from production clusters in Kerala, Karnataka, and Rajasthan, with FSSAI and phytosanitary certification as standard. EU Maximum Residue Level (MRL) compliance managed for every shipment.

02

Pulses & Legumes

India is the world's largest producer and consumer of pulses. We source bulk and packaged grades from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. Rising European demand for plant-based protein makes Indian pulses one of the most commercially active sourcing categories.

03

Oilseeds & Edible Oils

India is a major supplier of sesame seeds, groundnuts, mustard, and soybean. With European supply chains diversifying away from single-source dependency, India has become a strategic sourcing partner for EU food manufacturers and edible oil importers.

04

Processed & Packaged Food

Indian food processing has matured significantly. We source private-label and branded packaged foods including ready-to-cook products, snacks, sauces, pastes, chutneys, and specialty ingredients for European retailers, importers, and food service distributors.

05

Tea, Coffee & Beverages

Darjeeling and Assam teas, Arabica and Robusta coffees from the Western Ghats, and herbal infusions for European specialty importers. We work with certified estates and blending houses across the relevant growing regions.

06

Industrial & Manufactured Goods

India's manufacturing ecosystem extends far beyond agriculture. We source machinery parts, castings, textiles and garments, pharmaceutical intermediates, Ayurvedic cosmetics, handicrafts and home décor, and speciality chemicals. If it exists in India, we can source it.

Seven-Stage Process

We manage every stage.

Common Questions

Sourcing from India. Answered.

Direct answers on minimum orders, quality control, documentation, and logistics for sourcing from India to Europe.

What is the minimum order quantity for sourcing from India?
For bulk agricultural commodities such as spices, pulses, and oilseeds, commercial orders typically start at one full container load, approximately 17 to 22 metric tonnes depending on product density. For processed and packaged food products, minimum orders vary by manufacturer but most Indian export-grade food manufacturers require a minimum of 500 to 1,000 cartons for private-label production runs.
How do you ensure product quality matches what was sampled?
This is the most common problem in India sourcing and we address it through three mechanisms. First, we conduct pre-shipment physical inspection at the packing stage, comparing the commercial lot against the approved sample. Second, we arrange third-party laboratory testing through accredited labs for critical parameters. Third, we document the approved sample specifications in the commercial contract so there is a clear legal reference point if there is a quality dispute at destination.
What documentation is required to import food from India into Spain or Europe?
The documentation set varies by product but typically includes: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or airway bill, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate issued by the Indian NPPO, FSSAI export health certificate for processed foods, and any destination-specific import permits. For organic products, APEDA-issued organic certificates are required. For CBAM-covered goods, emissions declarations are now mandatory.
How long does shipment from India to Spain or Europe take?
Sea freight from major Indian ports including Mumbai, Mundra, and Chennai to European ports typically takes 20 to 28 days for direct services, or 28 to 35 days for transhipment via Colombo or Port Klang. To Spanish ports including Valencia and Barcelona, transit times are typically at the shorter end of this range. Air freight is available for high-value or time-sensitive products and takes 3 to 5 days.
Can you source organic or certified products from India?
Yes. India is one of the world's largest producers of certified organic agricultural products, with over 4.4 million hectares under organic cultivation. We work with APEDA-registered organic exporters whose certifications are recognised under the EU organic equivalence framework. We also source products certified to HACCP, ISO 22000, Fair Trade, and other standards relevant to European buyers.
We had a bad experience with an Indian supplier before. How is working with Onesto different?
The most common failure modes in India sourcing are: the supplier agreed to specifications they could not meet consistently; quality at delivery differed from the sample; documentation was incomplete or incorrect, causing customs delays; or communication broke down without anyone managing the relationship on the ground. We address every one of these through our verification process, pre-shipment inspection, documentation management, and on-ground presence at the point of origin.
