What is CBAM and why does it affect you?

The CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) is the new EU regulation that requires importing companies to declare and offset the carbon emissions generated in producing certain goods outside the EU.

In simple terms: if you buy industrial products from India, China, Turkey or any country without a carbon price equivalent to Europe's, you now have legal obligations to the EU.

Affected Products
  • Steel and iron
  • Aluminium
  • Cement
  • Fertilisers
  • Hydrogen
  • Electricity

Expansion to more sectors expected from 2026

Key Dates
  • Oct 2023 Start of the CBAM transitional period
  • Jan 2026 End of transitional period - full obligations in force
  • 2034 Complete phase-out of free emission allowances
Risk & Exposure

Non-compliance has real consequences.

🛡️

Financial Penalties

Companies that fail to correctly declare their CBAM imports can face fines of up to €50 per tonne of CO₂ not declared.

📄

EU Representative Required

If your supplier is outside the EU, you need an accredited representative in the European Union to manage your CBAM declarations. Qualifying that representative involves a complex administrative process.

Time Is Running Out

Declaration obligations are quarterly. The sooner you get your compliance in order, the less accumulated risk you carry. If you have not yet acted, now is the moment.

Our Services

CBAM End-to-End.

From applicability assessment to final declaration. We cover every step of the process so your company operates with full regulatory security.

01

CBAM Applicability Assessment (CN codes and scope)

We review your import portfolio and classify each product according to the CN codes affected by CBAM. We deliver a clear report indicating which imports are within scope, in what quantity and at what level of exposure with no ambiguity or unnecessary technical jargon.

02

CBAM Declarant Registration and Authorisation

The process of registering as a CBAM declarant with European customs authorities involves specific administrative requirements and strict deadlines. We guide you through every step: dossier preparation, authorisation management and clear definition of the periodic obligations that come with declarant status.

03

Calculation and Traceability of Embedded Emissions

We determine the carbon footprint embedded in your imported products following the official CBAM methodology. We work directly with your suppliers to obtain, verify and document the required emission data and establish a traceability system so that data is available for every declaration.

04

CBAM Reporting and Certificate Preparation (2026)

We prepare and submit your CBAM declarations within legal deadlines, ensuring that emissions information is complete and verifiable. With the obligation to purchase CBAM certificates in force from 2026, we help you plan ahead: estimated volume, economic impact and acquisition strategy.

05

CBAM Contractual Clauses with Suppliers

A commercial contract without specific CBAM clauses can leave critical questions unresolved: who provides the emission data? Who bears the cost if data arrives late or is incorrect? We draft and review the necessary clauses so that responsibilities are clear from the start of the commercial relationship.

06

Coordination with Customs and Freight Forwarder

CBAM compliance does not happen in an office - it happens in the logistics chain. We coordinate with your freight forwarder and customs department so that emission data collection, required documentation and declaration deadlines are integrated into your standard import operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ CBAM.

Does my company need to comply with CBAM?
If you import into the EU any of the products included in CBAM (steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen or electricity) from countries outside the European Union, yes, you have CBAM obligations. The applicability threshold is low: it affects everything from small importing companies to large industrial groups.
What happens if I do nothing?
Penalties for non-compliance are up to €50 per tonne of CO₂ not declared. In addition, customs authorities may reject your imports or require retroactive regularisation. The reputational risk with clients and partners is also significant.
Do I need to appoint an EU representative?
If your supplier or manufacturer is outside the EU - as is the case with India - yes, you need a declarant representative in the European Union. Qualifying that representative is a complex administrative process with specific requirements before customs authorities. Onesto advises and organises the entire process.
When do I need to start?
Now. The CBAM transitional period began in October 2023. Full obligations came into force in January 2026. If you have not yet acted, now is the moment - not when the first penalty arrives.
How much does your service cost?
It depends on import volume, products and declaration frequency.
Can you help me structure contracts with my foreign supplier?
Yes, it is one of the services that adds the most value and is most often overlooked. A commercial contract between importer and exporter that does not address CBAM can create serious conflicts. We draft and review contracts so that these responsibilities are clear from the start, protecting both parties.
What does logistics have to do with CBAM?
More than it seems. CBAM compliance requires data generated in the logistics chain: certificates of origin, emission data from the production process at origin, updated customs documentation and product traceability. If your logistics operation is not coordinated with your CBAM obligations, the data you need for declarations may arrive late, incomplete or not at all.
